Charlton house

A lady walking the grounds, rattling doorknobs, lusty hands grabbing females are just a sample of the paranormal antics at this Jacobean mansion house

The building was originally built as a Jacobean mansion in 1607 out of red brick for Sir Adam Newton who was James 1sts sons tutor. It was then the family home of Sir William Langhorne who wanted to pass it on to an heir but died childless. It's believed that he's just one of the spirits who haunts the building. He's buried nearby in the parish chapel. During restoration work carried out, the mummified body of a baby was found within an old fireplace. Who did it belong to? No one knows.

During WWI in 1918, the house was given free use of part of the house as a military hospital. However during this time one of the rooms was left empty due to the nurses refusing point blank to enter it.  It was opened less than a month before the signing of Armistice. Only four of these staff were paid. The other 55 members of staff were unpaid volunteers. It closed its doors on the 30th April 1919

It was then bought by the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich in 1925. During the blitz, the north Chapel wing was bombed and was therefore rebuilt.

There are many reports of paranormal goings on. Not only Sir William but one of the most prominent is the grey lady who is seen to be walking the estates grounds carrying a bundle. Could it be her baby?? There are oppressive feelings throughout the house especially in the attics and cellars and staff refuse to go down there. Doorknobs have also been seen to move and this as a result of a lusty male spirit looking for a suitable female. Guests staying at the house blame an amorous male after they've reported their bottoms pinched by unseen fingers.   Staff belongings have a tendency of disappearing and reappearing in other parts of the house.

Are you daring enough to see what really lies behind those castle walls??
